Home Shifting Checklist: What to Do 8 Weeks Before Your Moving Day

Published 1 April 2025

A week-by-week moving checklist for home shifting in India. Start 8 weeks out, stay organised, and avoid the last-minute chaos that makes moving so stressful.

The biggest mistake people make when moving house is underestimating how long the process takes. Packing, sorting, notifying services, coordinating movers, and preparing both your current and new home all take far more time than most people anticipate. This week-by-week checklist covers everything you need to do from eight weeks before your move to the day you walk into your new home. When you're ready to book, our packers and movers in Noida team is available for free surveys and itemised quotes.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day: Plan and Research

Eight weeks out, your job is to make the big decisions and start the logistics chain.

  • Confirm your moving date. As soon as you know your move date, lock it in. Availability for reliable packers and movers in Noida and Delhi NCR fills up quickly, especially during peak periods (end of month, academic year transitions in May/June, and festival periods).
  • Set your moving budget. Include packers and movers fees, packing supplies if you're doing any of your own packing, utility connection charges at the new home, and a contingency of at least 10%.
  • Begin researching movers. Shortlist three to five companies based on Google reviews, years of operation, and GST registration. Do not rely on aggregator quotes alone — contact companies directly.
  • Notify your landlord (if renting). Most rental agreements require 30–60 days' notice. Check your lease and send the notice in writing.
  • Visit the new home. If possible, visit your new home and make note of: floor access, parking distance from the entrance, lift dimensions (can your sofa fit?), and any repairs or painting that needs to happen before you move in.

6 Weeks Before Moving Day: Book Movers and Begin Decluttering

  • Book your packers and movers. Invite three companies for in-home or video surveys. Compare itemised, GST-inclusive quotes and confirm your booking in writing with a deposit.
  • Start decluttering. Work through your home room by room, starting with the least-used spaces (spare bedroom, storage room, attic). For each item, decide: keep, donate, sell, or discard. The less you move, the less you pay and the easier unpacking will be.
  • Organise a sale or donation drive. List items on OLX or Facebook Marketplace. Contact local NGOs about furniture and appliance donations.
  • Source packing supplies. If you plan to help with packing, order cardboard boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, and tape. Your movers may supply these, but confirm this in advance.
  • Plan your new home layout. Sketch a rough floor plan and decide where major furniture pieces will go. Share this with your movers so they can place items directly in the right rooms.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day: Notify and Organise

  • Notify your employer. Update your address with HR for payroll and tax documents.
  • Notify your bank and financial institutions. Update your address on all bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, and investment accounts. This is critical — missed correspondence can create serious problems.
  • Notify government agencies. Update your address on your Aadhaar card, voter ID, driving licence, and vehicle registration. The UIDAI allows Aadhaar address updates online via myAadhaar portal.
  • Contact utility providers. Arrange disconnection of electricity, gas, and water at your current address for the day after the move. Arrange connection at the new address from the day you move in.
  • Arrange school transfer documents. If you have children changing schools, request transfer certificates and academic records well in advance.
  • Confirm medical prescriptions and records. If you are changing doctors or clinics, request copies of your medical records.
  • Begin packing storage areas. Attic, garage, balcony storage, and rarely-used cupboards can be packed now.

3 Weeks Before Moving Day: Deep Dive Packing Begins

  • Pack books and documents. Books are heavy — use small boxes only. Scan important documents and back them up digitally before packing originals.
  • Pack seasonal items. Clothing, sports equipment, and decorative items that you won't need before the move.
  • Start packing the spare bedroom. Guest room and study items can be packed in full without disruption to daily life.
  • Photograph electronic setups. Before dismantling your TV, home theatre, or gaming setup, photograph the cable connections from the back so you can recreate them exactly at the new home.
  • Service your car if moving to a new city. If you are driving to your new home, ensure the car is in good condition for a long journey.
  • Arrange professional cleaning for the current home. Book an end-of-tenancy cleaning service to run immediately after the movers leave, so you can hand back the property in good condition.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day: Pack in Earnest

  • Pack the master bedroom. Leave out only what you need for the next two weeks. Pack bedside items, picture frames, decorative objects, and extra linen.
  • Pack the living room. Art, decoratives, bookshelves, cushions, and extra furniture can be packed now.
  • Begin packing the kitchen. Start with rarely-used items: baking equipment, serving dishes, specialty appliances, and pantry items you won't consume before moving day. See our full kitchen packing guide for step-by-step instructions.
  • Dismantle furniture that is being transported. If your movers have not arranged to do this, begin taking apart flat-pack furniture and bagging all screws and fittings in labelled zip-lock bags.
  • Confirm moving day logistics with your movers. Reconfirm the date, start time, number of crew, and truck size. Confirm parking arrangements at both ends. Make sure your movers have both your old and new address, and your mobile number.

1 Week Before Moving Day: Final Push

  • Pack almost everything. By now, only your daily essentials should be unpacked — one set of bed linen, everyday clothes, toiletries, a few kitchen items, and any valuables you'll carry personally.
  • Prepare a "moving day essentials" bag. This travels with you in the car, not on the truck. Include: phone charger, wallet, IDs, keys to the new home, a change of clothes, basic toiletries, water and snacks, and any important documents.
  • Defrost the refrigerator. Your fridge needs to be defrosted and completely dry 24 hours before the movers arrive. It cannot be transported while running or while wet.
  • Withdraw cash. Have cash available for tips, any last-minute supplies, and unexpected expenses on moving day.
  • Do a final walkthrough of your current home. Check inside all cupboards, under beds, on high shelves, and in storage areas to make sure nothing is left behind.

Moving Day

  • Be present or have a trusted representative present at both the origin and destination throughout the move.
  • Do a room-by-room walkthrough with the lead mover before loading begins to confirm all items are accounted for.
  • At the new home, place a copy of your floor plan at the entrance so movers know where each box and piece of furniture goes — this prevents double handling.
  • Do a final walkthrough of your old home before the truck leaves — check lofts, balconies, under beds, and all storage areas.
  • Check all items at the destination against the inventory before signing off.

After Moving Day: Settle In

  • Unpack your first-night essentials box before anything else.
  • Set up beds for the night before worrying about the rest.
  • Report any damage to your movers in writing within 24–48 hours (check your agreement for the claims window).
  • Update your address on any services you may have missed: subscription services, online shopping accounts, professional associations.
  • Introduce yourself to your neighbours — it is a good start in any new community.
